Atlanta Pipe
Band
|
The Atlanta Pipe Band is a Grade III bagpipe band that I have played with for most of my piping career,
except for the four years when I played with the City of Washington Pipe Band, and the two years that I played with
the North Carolina State University Pipes & Drums. I was Pipe Major of the Atlanta Pipe Band
for four competition seasons (2000 through 2003). Prior to becoming Pipe Major,
I served fourteen years as Pipe Sergeant of the band including in 1994 when we were
undefeated and won the U.S. Open Pipe Band Championship for Grade III in Alma, Michigan.
I was Pipe Major of the band when we recorded our debut CD Phoenix Rising. in 2003

and 2005. In 2004 we did well in the Qualifier and were able to compete in the finals
where we placed 14th overall. Our performances can be heard on the following CD's

I own two sets of Walsh Shuttlepipes. My first was the two-drone model and the second
is the three drone model (which I prefer). Both sets are in maple and are mouthblown.
|
Hamish and Fin Moore
|
I own two sets of Hamish Moore smallpipes, one of them with a "high B" key which
allows the playing of additional tunes because of the extended range. Both sets
are bellows blown.

I own one set of mouthblown Shepherd smallpipes in Bb.

I use Peter's "Adjustable Blowstick" on all my sets of Highland Pipes. I also use
his tube watertrap on those pipes of mine with a hide bag.

Roddy MacLellan is a bagpipe maker located in Monroe, NC. He is a fine gentleman and
I consider him to be one of the top bagpipe makers in the world. To quote a fellow judge -
"I have never heard a bad set of MacLellan pipes". I can echo this sentiment...every set I have ever
seen/heard has been of the finest quality.

Leading the 1998 Commencement ceremony at Emory University (my Alma Mater). To my
right is my good friend Ian Coletti, who was Pipe Major of the Atlanta Pipe Band
at the time. Ian and I played together in both the Atlanta Pipe Band and also the
City of Washington Pipe Band. Ian is a great bagpipe player and is currently living
near Seattle, Washington.
The City of Washington Pipe Band marching into the competition circle at the 2004
North Berwick Highland Games in Scotland. I am on the far side of the band.
Playing for the 2008 Commencement Ceremony for Georgia State University held at
the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. I am the fourth bagpiper from the right - the one with
the thin blue streamer laying over my right shoulder.
Here I am at 15 years old playing my bagpipes for the Dr. Hapes Festinval in Hapeville
Georgia.
